The A Pillar: Adaptability, or Why Wellness That Lasts Is Wellness That Bends

By Coach Kia Joy · September 10, 2026

I have watched so many women build a beautiful, disciplined wellness routine, and then watch it collapse the moment life refused to cooperate. A grandchild gets sick and needs watching. A parent's health takes a turn. Work demands more than it should. Travel throws off every carefully planned meal and workout. And suddenly, the woman who was doing so well feels like she has failed, simply because her life did not hold still long enough for her routine to survive it.

I want to offer you a different way of thinking about this, because I do not believe you failed at all. I believe the routine was never built to bend, and life will always ask you to bend.

This is the third pillar of the W.E.A.L.T.H. Framework: A, Adaptability, wellness that bends with real life instead of breaking.

Why This Pillar Matters

Most wellness advice is written for an imaginary version of your life, one with predictable mornings, uninterrupted evenings, and a body that behaves the same way every single day. That life does not exist for most of us, and it certainly does not exist for women in the fullness of midlife, carrying careers and caregiving and changing bodies and everything in between.

When your plan only works in perfect conditions, it is not really a plan. It is a trap, one that quietly teaches you to see every disruption as a personal failure instead of what it actually is: a normal, human, expected part of life.

Adaptability asks a different question. Not "how do I stick to the plan no matter what," but "how do I build something flexible enough to survive contact with my actual life."

What Adaptability Looks Like in Real Life

This pillar shows up in some of the most practical, unglamorous parts of our work together:

Adaptability is not lowering your standards. It is refusing to let an all-or-nothing mindset talk you out of the "something" that is actually available to you today.

Bending Is Not the Same as Breaking

I want you to hear this clearly: needing to adjust your plan is not evidence that you are undisciplined or inconsistent. A tree that bends in the wind is not weak. It is the one still standing after the storm, while the rigid ones split and fall.

The goal was never a perfect, unbroken streak. The goal is a woman who keeps returning to herself, again and again, no matter how many times life interrupts her. That returning, not the streak, is the real measure of your consistency.

Wherever you are today, weary or hopeful or somewhere quietly in between, there is a place for you here.

With care and kindness,
